Hajj 2024: All is Set For airlift of Ghanaian Pilgrims- Alhaji Gomda

By Tanko Mohammed Rabiu

The Director of Communications of the Ghana Hajj Board, Alhaji Abdul Rahman Gomda has revealed that, all is set for the airlift of Ghanaian Pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for this year's Hajj pilgrimage as  every department of the board is ready up and doing in the overall operations.

Alhaji Gomda was the guest on the Islamic program on GTV dubbed 'Islam and Life' as part of the Hajj Board's media engagement prior to the start of the first phase of this year's Hajj operations starting in the Northern Regional capital of Tamale. Basically and primarily, the interaction is based on the preparations of this year's Hajj operations which comes with new innovations and improvements in the  executions of each department of the operations.

The Director of Communications indicated the readiness of all stakeholders in the Hajj operations and how committed they are to put up their best in achieving yet another successful Hajj operations.

Alhaji Gomda explains that, the instability in Sudan will affect the travel hours the aircraft makes from Ghana to Saudi Arabia because there will be a rerouting to avoid passing through Sudan and that all arrangements in this regard is completed.

On the issue of effectiveness of the operations, Alhaji Gomda opined that, digitilization has been the pivot mechanism in running the affairs of the board right from payments of Hajj fares, general information on the operations, documentations, agents identification and other important data are found on the mobile phone application and some soficicated softwares used by the IT department and these has helped in making things possible for the Hajj Board.

Alhaji Gomda outlined the significance of the pilgrim orientation which started last year to every pilgrim especially those who do not have any idea on how to perform Hajj. The orientation also gives an opportunity for the medical team to screen and diagnose prospective pilgrims who may have serious health conditions to prepare them for the Holy journey. He said the orientation for this year will kick start in earnest to prepare pilgrims spiritually, mentally and physically.

On meals for Ghanaian pilgrims, he reassured Ghanaians of the usual provision of Ghanaian local dishes to pilgrims in the two daily meals schedules for Ghanaian pilgrims during the Hajj season as a way of respecting their food taste preference.

In general, Alhaji Gomda said every services needed to make Ghanaian pilgrims comfortable are ready including the usual high standard accommodation, exotic buses, stay in Mina ( Masha'ir') and all the other services.

The Non- Hajj Visa holders infiltration which Alhaji Gomda described as ' gate Crashers' will be well controlled to ease the pressure in Mina and to also protect the pilgrims in Mecca at all Ghana Hajj Board establishments and that every check point towards Mecca is currently on lock down for these gate Crashers.

Alhaji Gomda has revealed that, starting from next year, every non- Hajj Visa applicant will sign an undertaken before the Visa is issued and the applicant must comply which is to immediately leave Mecca after exhausting the Visa timeline and all these is another measure to end the infiltration by the gate Crashers.

He therefore urged prospective pilgrims or any potential pilgrim to stay away from shallantants who goes round deceiving innocent people to help them travel for Hajj pilgrimage.

Hajj 2024: Board, Stakeholders Meet Over Hajj Flights

 By A.R. Gomda

The Ghana Hajj Board and stakeholders in the management of the annual pilgrimage yesterday held their maiden meeting ahead of the airlifting of Ghanaian pilgrims to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia scheduled to commence towards the end of the month.

At the annual engagement preceding the commencement of flights, were representatives of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Plant Quarantine, Aviance Ghana Limited Handling Company, National Intelligence Bureau, Veterinary Services, Ghana National Fire Service and Defence Intelligence and the Ghana Ambulance Service.

Each agency was taken through their checklists and questions posed where necessary.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Hajj Board, Alhaji Farouk Hamza expressed gratitude to the agencies for the services they have rendered over the years towards the successful airlift of pilgrims to and from Saudi Arabia.

The Executive Secretary disclosed details about this year’s Hajj which, according to him, would entail nine flights; four from Tamale and five from Accra. “We could alter this arrangement when especially passengers preferring to fly from Tamale outnumber those wishing to do so from Accra,” he told the representatives.

“We are projecting the airlift of 3,825 pilgrims from the country, but this could rise to 4,000. The Flynas aircraft to be engaged in the airlift has a capacity of 431, but because of luggage it could be doing 425. We are also looking at prolonged flight hours because the Sudanese war has necessitated a re-routing of the flight path. One aircraft would be involved in the back-to-back trip of 21 hours turnaround mission.”

An orientation exercise as was done last year would be undertaken to educate prospective pilgrims about the dos and don’ts of the Hajj and international travels in general.

In a related development, a member of the Hajj Board, Alhaji Manaf last Wednesday warned those who are ready to breach the Hajj protocols by for instance using non-Hajj visa to perform the pilgrimage that they would be in for a real trouble. “Such persons would be smoked out through technology and jailed after which they would be deported and banned from setting foot on Saudi soil for ten years.

“Sanctions also awaits drivers in Saudi Arabia who would be engaged in smuggling such persons around the Kingdom with a view to having them perform the Hajj,” he pointed out.

Activities at the Hajj Village have started peaking ahead of the commencement of the airlift scheduled to commence in Tamale at the end of this month.

Hajj 2024: Ghana Hajj Board is poised in protecting legitimate pilgrims with tight security- Alhaji Manaf

By Tanko Mohammed Rabiu

The Ghana Hajj Board has assured Prospective Hajj prigrims of value for money with a proactive security arrangement as they embark on this Holy journey.

According to a member of the Hajj Board, Alhaji Manaf on an Accra based radio station, Marhaba radio monitored by Hajjcommunications.com among many other things on Hajj 2024 preparations indicated that, the right of legitimate pilgrims will once again be respected and protected especially when the issue of intruders has now become a concern to the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and other Saudi Arabia agencies.

Alhaji Manaf who was the only guest on the Hausa language program said " We are are not taking it lightly at all with holders of tourist, visiting, work and other non- Hajj Visa holders who usually occupy our camps and facilities to the detriment of legitimate pilgrims. The security arrangement will be so tight and rigid in a manner that will eliminate any form of intrusions in our establishments".

He added " By May 23, 2024 to June 1, 2024, every non-Hajj visa holder is expected to leave the City of Mecca and any culprit found will be prosecuted with a six month jail term, a fine of 60,000 Saudi Riyals and a ten years ban from entering the Kingdom. For that matter, we as a Board will ensure the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia succeeds in this project which will go a long way to improve upon the Hajj ecosystem which Ghana participates yearly".

Alhaji Manaf has also revealed that, a smart card will be issued by the Saudi Arabia Authorities to every Hajj pilgrim with Hajj permit for easy identification and protection of pilgrims.

The host of the program, popularly known as Alhaji Paapa Angola recounted how in 2023, four Ghanaians who used the non-Hajj visas to Saudi Arabia with the intention to perform Hajj were arrested and detained until Hajj season was over, sent messages to the radio station seeking for intervention.

Paapa Angola reiterated the need for these persons to stay away from performing Hajj with the unapproved Visas during the Hajj season or do so on their own peril.

Again, Alhaji Manaf said credible information reaching him indicates that those who are already in Mecca with the unapproved Visas to perform this year's Hajj are paying $500 as initial payment to be added to about 50 people in a normal single room without water and food inclusive to the initial deposit. He said majority of these people are aged and many die even before the start of Hajj due to hardship and frustration of hide and seek.

On the cost of Hajj, Alhaji Manaf said, payments of all services are done in Saudi Arabia before the Hajj Board announces the fares and that is after the Hajj season agreement is sign between government of Ghana and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the Hajj conference and any payment gaps are handled by the government of Ghana because the Ghana Hajj Board is a government agency not a private entity to make unrealistic profits. And that every component of the services to be used by the pilgrims is embedded in the Hajj fare with fairness in accordance with the current prices of goods and services in Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has allocated a quota of 4000 for Ghana and the Ghana Hajj Board has scheduled a total of 425 pilgrims per flight for the Nine flights for both Tamale International Airport and Kotoka International Airport.

The start of the first phase of the airlift of Ghanaian pilgrims begins on May 28, 2024 in Tamale for pilgrims from the Northern part of Ghana.

Hajj 2024: Closing of Umrah season; issuance of all Visas should be put on hold except Hajj Visas to control over crowding at Masha'ir

By Tanko Mohammed Rabiu

Everything has its beginning and the end as the saying goes, as things get to an end, so as any other thing begins to make up the circle of life until the end of time.

With the principle of adherence to natural arrangement of life circle, the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has announced 15 of Shawwal which is equivalent to April 24, 2024 as the last day of this current Umrah Season to pave way for Hajj 2024.

It is a great news to especially stakeholders in the Hajj and Umrah organization to further help them prepare well for a stress free Hajj season. From the current arrangements for Umrah, any type of Visa like the Umrah Visa, Visiting Visa, tourist and transit Visa can be used to perform Umrah due to the unlimited quota for visiting and performing Umrah during its season.

The announcement of the April 24 as the last day of Umrah season should also end the issuance of  Umrah visiting, tourist and transit Visas to allow the smooth flow and arrangement of Hajj Visas to prospective Hajj pilgrims.

The usage of any other Visa rather than the Hajj Visa during Hajj Season is violating the quota system for participating countries and is also affecting Saudi Arabia's plans and programs for a limited Hajj and thus affects the crowd control systems due to influx of other none Hajj Visa holders.

None Hajj Visa holders makes living at Masha'ir' ( Mina, Arafah, Muzdalifa Jamarat) very difficult for Hajj Visa holders during the Hajj period where these 'illegal' Hajj seekers encroached the spaces at the tents including food water and social amenities meant for Hajj Visa holders.

For instance, in 2023, almost all the participating countries in Mina had shortages of tents due to these intruders and quite a number of Hajj Visa holders lived outside their tents with so much discomfort. Many online portals reported these incidents and these are few of the headlines; Hajj 2023: shortage of tents, food mar first day of Hajj NAHCON blames organizers from www.premiumtimesng.com,  Hajj: Tent shortage hits pilgrims in Mina from www.dailytrust.com, We live like 'homeless people ' in Mina; Malaysian pilgrim cries out from www.hajjreporters.com.

To curtail and prevent these occurrences during the Hajj season, the issuance of Umrah, visiting, tourist and transit Visas should be put on hold immediately the Umrah season ends to prevent none Hajj Visa holders from entering the two Holy cities until Hajj season is over. These holders of None Hajj Visas pitch camp in nearby cities to Mecca many months and weeks awaiting the start of Hajj while others enter during the start of Hajj season together with Hajj pilgrims with their none Hajj Visas.

Hajj stakeholders especially Hajj missions across the world are much worried and concerned about the unplanned over crowding at Masha'ir' caused by intruders and are calling on the Saudi Arabia ministry of Hajj and Umrah to initiate the process of putting on hold the issuance of None Hajj Visas before and during Hajj Season.

Hajj 2024: Quality of Hajj Pilgrimage in the Contemporary Hajj Ecosystem; The Case of Ghana

By Tanko Mohammed Rabiu, Independent Hajj Reporter

Around 2.5 million Muslims used to attend Hajj annually in the pre-pandemic times and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia downsized the numbers of Muslims allowed to perform the Hajj rites to prevent spread of COVID-19 which saw a total of 100,000 pilgrims within the Kingdom to performed the Hajj under pandemic in 2020.

According to a white paper research by world Hajj and Umrah conference foundation and the Hajj people dubbed Hajj under pandemic conditions” the entire Hajj-Ecosystem holding its breath, paralyzed and in wait, concerned with the uncertainty that shrouds every aspect of Hajj Management and planning”.

The research continues “With optimism, over 95% of stakeholders interviewed during the specialized research engagement Voiced their vote of confidence, in support of the leadership and decisions made by the Saudi government. Echoed unanimously is the resolute confidence in the Saudi Ministry of Hajj Umrah ability to help the Hajj and Umrah industry navigate the challenges posed by COVID 19 and rejuvenate the sector back to normalcy”.

As part of a digital solutions package for post Hajj in the COVID-19 period, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah launched several digitization infrastructures like the Hajj Smart Card, online payments and registration, electronic visa application and several technological approach in streamlining the Hajj ecosystem.

According to Arab news in one of its publications on digital solutions reported on how these digital solutions are going to help pilgrims and Hajj economy to bounce back after the pandemic. “According to the ministry, there are two versions of the smart card. The digital version can be accessed through the Nusuk application and provides comprehensive information about the pilgrims, including their place of residence, health records, itinerary, and other services.

The printed smart card, meanwhile, includes details such as identity number, nationality, and the address of the pilgrimage company. Additionally, it features a QR response code” it said.

Same Arab News reported that, “by 2030, the kingdom is committed to tripling this number and welcoming six million pilgrims a year as part of its Vision 2030 programme, propelling the kingdom’s Hajj tourism market value to more than $350 billion by 2032”.

“This growth has provided Hajj planners with a logistical challenge that is increasingly being solved by a host of emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, augmented reality, the metaverse, robots and drones” the news reported.

The recovery plan under the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah had a direct and indirect effects on participating countries Hajj operations and pilgrim facilitation. The kingdom raised the existing VAT from 10% to 15% which translated into the various sectors of the economy in Saudi Arabia including housing, transportation, telecommunication, health, commerce, aviation, food, services and other sectors thus making the cost of organizing Hajj and Umrah expensive.

This means, more trading currencies like US dollar, British pound and the Euro are needed for exchange with the Saudi Riyal for goods and services and this definitely has a direct impact on the cost of performing Hajj by participating countries.

Despite these developments in the Hajj ecosystem, the Ghana Hajj Board since the resumption of full-scale Hajj operations after the COVID-19 Pandemic, has managed and maintained the quality of Hajj for Ghanaian pilgrims through out their stay in Saudi Arabia during Hajj seasons and the Board has recorded positive post-Hajj public and media commendations of the conduct of the pilgrimage.

The value for money component in the actualization of every pilgrim in attaining the purpose of performing Hajj after huge financial commitments in this spiritual journey is been felt by Ghanaian pilgrims who are under the supervision of the Ghana Hajj Board. The current atmosphere during Hajj requires a serene environment for pilgrims to stay and worship in a stress-free manner and that comes with financial obligation. The Ghana Hajj Board has therefore considered and implemented all the necessary mechanisms to ensure pilgrims gets value for money by providing them a conducive high standard accommodation to stay in Medina and Makkah. For instance, 2023 Ghanaian pilgrims were accommodated in one of the best hotels in the world called Hilton and Frontel hotels which is a stone throw to Prophet Mohammed S.A.W mosque which is the main reason for visiting Medina. This efforts by the Ghana Hajj Board reduces the walking distance previous pilgrims make to the mosque for prayers and supplications and that has help them to live in comfort.

The same value for money approach by the Ghana Hajj Board applies to all the services provided to pilgrims in the area of good transportation, food and refreshment, security, health services, Masha’ir and all-important aspect of the pilgrimage. With the level of respect accorded to Ghanaian pilgrims by the Ghana Hajj Board, many participating countries with higher Hajj cost than Ghana, have not been able to meet with the comfort pilgrims needed to stay and worship under this era of Hajj pilgrimage which requires more care and easiest proximity to Hajj rites and areas outside the pillars of Hajj but important to pilgrims.

Despite the poor performance of the Ghanaian Cedi against the US dollar resulting to some increase in Ghana Hajj cost post-COVID, Ghanaian pilgrims have not in any way been denied all the luxury a pilgrim in this contemporary Hajj ecosystem. The current Hajj ecosystem affected housing, transport, airfares and the general economic outlook of Saudi Arabia in the post-COVID era. The transformational road map of Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage dubbed ‘vision 2030’ and other redevelopment strategies by the Kingdom to meet up with the technological advancement set up in its visions to broaden the socio-economic outlook, thus adjusting the cost of doing business especially in the Hajj and Umrah industry which contributes about 7% of the Kingdom’s GDP.

Every financial transaction in the Hajj and Umrah services is done in the Saudi Riyal irrespective of which country you are coming from. For instance, as someone from Ghana wishing to book for an accommodation or any other services in Saudi Arabia especially the two Holy cities as a pilgrim, that prospective pilgrim must convert his or Ghanaian Cedi to the US Dollar, British pound or the Euros but preferable is the US Dollar. With your Dollar, you need to still convert to the Saudi Riyal to meet the cost of the services which is always in the Saudi Riyal. The Saudi Riyal has strong forex value than any currency as far as trading is concern in the Kingdom. For example, you need about GH¢ 3 to exchange for SAR 1 and GH¢ 12.4 for $ 1 and these affects the costing of Hajj service components including airfares.

Another component of the Hajj cost across every participating country which people are not considering in pushing up the cost is the airfares. All air services during Hajj is by one-way flight schedules under chatter services. The plane enrout with crew from Saudi Arabia without passengers to Ghana and carries pilgrims back to Saudi Arabia and return to Ghana empty repeatedly. This is because, Ghana does not have a national airline nor any local based carrier. Even some of the participating countries with national airlines has higher Hajj cost than Ghana yet Ghanaian pilgrims receives more improved services comparing to many countries in advantage position.

In conclusion, the Ghana Hajj Mission with its dedicated staff and result oriented leadership have been able to positioned the Hajj operations into the contemporary Hajj ecosystem to meet the demands of pilgrims as expected by the ministry of Hajj and Umrah and the vision 2030 agenda. The Hajj cost by the Ghana Hajj Mission is in line with the changes in the Hajj ecosystem though Ghana Hajj authorities have managed to bring down the burden of prospective pilgrims by introducing marginal and affordable Hajj cost though the economy of Ghana is not yet stable with Ghanaians finding it difficult to see the reality of the changes in the global Hajj ecosystem.
